Bereavement
Beth Sholom is committed to responding quickly and compassionately, and to offering guidance in accordance with Jewish tradition in the event of a death. Our rabbi and executive director provide necessary information and guidance needed to support mourners in making funeral arrangements, setting up and conducting shiva minyanim, and providing light refreshments following the funeral. We maintain contracts with area funeral homes to make it easy for our members to plan a traditional funeral at a reasonable cost.
When a death occurs during working hours, please call David Bass in the Beth Sholom office, 301-663-3437. When a death occurs outside of working hours or on Shabbat or holidays, please call Rob’s cell phone, 303-717-3933. Leave a message and Marcia will return your call.
The Chesed Committee assists families by providing light refreshments following the funeral and burial. The Religious Affairs Committee will help set up and lead shiva minyanim.
Please accept our condolences on your loss. May God comfort you among the other mourners of Zion.
If you would like to order a Memorial Board Plaque, please fill out the Memorial Board Plaque Form If you need assistance with this form, please contact Ash or David in the Office.

Since G-d decided that our redemption required taking the first born of Egypt, the first born of Israel are required to fast the day before Pesach (except when the holiday begins on Saturday night, since we don't fast on Shabbat, in which case the fast is the preceding Thursday). However, minor fasts like this can be broken if partaking in a celebratory meal. One way to have such a meal is a siyyum, or joining the concluding study of a larger body of rabbinic literature. It is a longstanding tradition for first-born sons to come together that morning for such a siyyum where we first borns will break the fast together. -
